THE LAST "W" MACHINE CAMARO FROM DOC WATSON BEFORE HIS PASSING Aug.2, 2015, RIP "DOC"
HERE IS A GREAT ARTCLE WE HAVE TO SHARE WIZTH YOU ABOUT JACK "DOC" WATSON....
OWN A PIECE OF DOC WATSON AND HURST PERFORMANCE HISTORY
THIS IS CAR #1 OF LIMITED PRODUCTION RUN, OWN THE FIRST CAR THAT DOC PRODUCED IN THE "W" SERIES..
Each Car Is Registered And Recorded
Jack “Doc” Watson had an early passion for automotive development that spurred him to create after-market products and specialty vehicles during his 50-year career.
Among his accomplishments was the development of the first Hurst Oldsmobile in 1968 and co-inventing the Jaws of Life rescue tool.
Mr. Watson, who had been working with inventor George Hurst on various General Motors programs, began working for him full time.
Before his Hurst days, Doc worked with fabled Corvette engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov who, along with Ed Cole, was called the father of the small-block Chevrolet, and Castelletto Dolza, better known as John Dolza, who developed the thinwall, rocker-ball rocker-arm assembly for the small-block Chevrolet. Doc worked with GM and developed "Super Duty" groups within each division.
In 1968, General Motors had a rule. No engine larger than 400 cubic inches could be installed in any intermediate body. That included GTOs, Cutlasses, Chevelles and Skylarks. But George Hurst had a 455-cu.in. V-8 installed in a 1968 Olds 4-4-2. He found the swap to be easy, and ironically, the 455 weighed less than the 400-cu.in. engine it replaced. Doc took George's idea several steps further and added special paint, a Hurst shifter, some engine modifications and a walnut dash appliqué. The Hurst/Olds was thus born, and today is among the most highly prized of all muscle cars. The first Hurst/Olds had 390hp and featured a Toronado-only color-Peruvian Silver accented with black stripes and a black trunk lid. The first 4-4-2s also got the Toronado's 455 with a lumpy cam, big-valve heads, and modified carburetor and distributor. Also in the package was the W30 Ram Air system and red plastic front inner fender liners, which were the idea of John Beltz, an Olds engineer, whom Doc approached about building the Hurst/Olds. The Hurst/Olds conversions from plain-Jane Cutlasses were handled by Demmer Engineering in Lansing. Demmer had about 30 days to convert the planned run of 500 cars. Olds had thousands of orders and couldn't fill them. The final number of 515 cars was built to accommodate a Lansing-area Oldsmobile dealer that demanded more Hurst/Oldses. Being the success it was, the first Hurst/Olds cemented a highly successful relationship between Hurst Performance of Warminster, Pennsylvania, and Oldsmobile. In 1969, Hurst/Olds sales nearly doubled, to 912 hardtops and two convertibles.
Among his contributions to Hurst’s company was his operation of the Hurst Aid support trailer, with a complete machine shop, at racing events. Mr. Watson earned the nickname “Shifty Doctor” for his mechanical prowess as he helped racers get through tech inspection free of charge, his son said.
Mr. Watson’s experience also included creating 87 niche-market special vehicle programs and managing the building of more than 137,500 special vehicles.
Doc's greatest accomplishments was his involvement in the development of what is now known as the Jaws of Life tool, named for his father’s initials J.A.W.

Officially offered for sale on February 10, 1955, the first Chrysler 300 was athletic looking with 300 gross horsepower aboard, it was among the quickest cars of its time. It was able to achieve 60 mph in just 9.8 seconds, according to a test in Mechanix Illustrated by “Uncle Tom” McCahill. Uncle Tom also spurred the car up to a full 130 mph. Tom McCahill and others in the contemporary automotive press, used the term Beautiful Brutes” to describe Chrysler 300 series cars.
Besides being the most powerful production car of its time, the first Chrysler 300 was also among the best handling, thanks to a heavy-duty suspension. It can very well be considered an ancestor of the later muscle cars, though much more expensive, luxurious and exclusive.
The most prominent display of the first 300’s attributes did not come in any showroom, but on racetracks around the Southeast. Back in 1955, NASCAR stock cars were, in fact, stock production vehicles. Except for some crude safety equipment and numbers on the doors, they were almost indistinguishable from the cars the public could buy. With absolutely no financial support from Chrysler, Mercury Outboard founder Carl Kiekhaefer campaigned a fleet of white 300s during the 1955 NASCAR and AAA seasons with drivers like the Flock brothers (Tim, Fonty and Bob), Norm Nelson, Buck Baker, Speedy Thompson and Frank Mundy to name a few.
The Kiekhaefer 300s were spectacularly dominant and overwhelmed the factory-backed Chevrolets and Fords. Tim Flock took the driver’s championship while winning 18 races. He finished in the top five an astounding 32 times. His brother, Fonty, took another three victories, while Chrysler campaigner Lee Petty took home three trophies. Suddenly, the 300 had a glorious racing heritage in addition to its advertised Hundred Million Dollar Looks.
Considering the short model year for that first 300, 1,725 were sold at an expensive $4,109 base price.
This was the car to start the legacy. It had Virgil Exner’s distinctive styling and the 331hemi. The 1955 300 had a two door coupe body and clean, simple Chrysler Windsor side and rear quarter trim. Up front were two large Imperial “egg crate” grilles. This first of the letter series cars did not actually bear a letter. Chrysler’s original manuals named it the C-300, which was an appropriate name for the car. The “C-” designation was applied to all Chrysler models, and the 300 stood for the engine horsepower.
It was THE first modern American production car to achieve this output. Power came from an updated source already available; the fabled “Hemi”331 cubic inch hemispherical head engine, modified with a “full race” cam, larger dual exhaust, and topped off with 2 4-barrel carburetors. The suspension was made firmer, allowing it to handle far better than most cars. It was given a special performance PowerFlite transmission, while the inside remained pure luxury.
Notably, it was fast. The battle lines would be drawn, when it did 127.58 mph in the flying mile at Daytona, and averaged 92 mph in the Daytona Grand National stock car race. This car dominated the stock car circuit, earning the NASCAR and AAA championships its first year out.
The car was only available in three exterior colors: Black, Tango Red and Platinum, combined with a luxurious tan leather interior.
The Chrysler 300 "Letter Series" Are High-Performance Personal Luxury Cars That Were Built By Chrysler In The U.S. From 1955 To 1965. The C-300 Was Really A Race Car Aimed At The NASCAR Circuits And Known As The First Muscle Car.
In The Inaugural Year For This Model, There Were A Total Of 1725 Cars Produced Of Which Only 15% Are Believed To Be In Existence Today.
Features On This Most Stunning Automobile:
The design was simple but strong without much chrome on the sides, creating the illusion of fast forward movement. It was named the 300 because in 1955, when it was introduced, it came equipped with Dual Carter 4 barrel carburetors, a solid lifter camshaft, and a larger exhaust that produced 300 horsepower, the first modern American production engine to accomplish that.

By 1961, the excesses of the late 1950s were mostly gone and U.S. car manufacturers were trimming fins and acres of chrome. Pontiac was five years into Bunkie Knudsen’s reign, and John DeLorean was making his presence felt as the horsepower wars heated up in earnest. Drivers like Fireball Roberts, Junior Johnson and David Pearson won 21 of 52 NASCAR races and the Super Duty 421-cid V-8s were the engines to beat.

Pontiac had success in the sales race, too, making its way to third place in 1961. The division had a dizzying lineup of 15 standard models, plus the new Tempest compact. Top seller for Pontiac in 1961 was the Catalina.

Like all big cars, the Catalina was downsized for 1961, and its base engine was the 215-hp, 389-cid V-8, but options ranged all the way to the 405-hp Super Duty 421-cid V-8. The top-selling body style was the $2,700 four-door sedan, though a variety of two-doors, station wagons, and convertibles were available.

The 1962 Pontiac's received a heavy facelift from the 1961 design with more rounded body contours and new rooflines on two-door hardtops featuring convertible-like bows. Catalina sedans and coupes got a 1-inch wheelbase increase, after spending 1961 on a 119-inch length shared with full-sized Chevys

Pontiac tidied up its styling for 1962, with a V-shaped twin grill, full length side-trim, and a multi-plane, convertible-look roof on hardtops.

For modern day enthusiasts, the 1961 to 1964 Pontiac Catalina is an excellent choice for a starter collectible. Their large production numbers mean parts are easily available, and plenty are available in a variety of conditions. Catalina's are sturdy, and their styling has worn well. High horsepower options are potent street machines and carry a price premium, but are worth seeking out.

Lincoln Continental is a model name for a luxury car marketed by the Lincoln division of Ford Motor Company. Along with the Zephyr, the Continental is a Lincoln nameplate that has seen use in a sub-division, the short-lived Continental Division of 1956–1957. As a Lincoln, the Continental nameplate saw use for 49 years, from 1939 to 1948 (skipping World War II) and from 1958 to 2002.
Serving as the Lincoln flagship for its first three generations, the Continental name conveyed special cachet in the product line. In the 1961 redesign of the Lincoln line, the three-model line was consolidated down to the Continental, which served as the sole Lincoln sedan for the next 16 years. With the exception of the Lincoln Mark VIII, all versions of the Lincoln Mark Series of the personal luxury cars are based on a corresponding generation of the Continental.
In the early 1980s, the Continental changed from its traditional role as the full-size Lincoln (taken over by the Town Car) to a mid-size sedan as Lincoln sought to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles. In an effort to better compete with imported automakers, the Continental adopted the platform of the Ford Taurus in 1988, which it used until 2002.

The Panamera has the same ready-for-anything combination of performance and practicality that made the Porsche 928 S4 one of the world’s most underrated GTs. The Panamera Turbo is four second fast to 60 mph and will hit 188 mph.
Top of the range Panamera is the $132,600 Turbo, which boasts 500hp courtesy of a pair of turbochargers, and standard all-wheel drive.
The 500-hp Turbo V-8 is smooth and punchy, making its peak power just 700 rpm shy of its 6700 rpm red line, and delivering a useful 516 lb-ft of torque from 2250 rpm to 4500 rpm. (In Turbos fitted with the optional Sport Chrono Package, hitting the Sport Plus button on the center console activates an overboost function that increases peak torque to 567 lb-ft from 3000 rpm to 4000 rpm.) Left to its own devices, the seven speed PDK transmission slips imperceptibly between ratios, ensuring a seamless surge of acceleration.
Inside, the Panamera is truly gorgeous, mixing colored leather, wood veneers, carbon fiber, and soft-sheen aluminum in ways that will have Audi‘s interior designers sitting up and taking notice. The interior’s signature item is the angled center console that recalls the Carrera GT. It’s festooned with buttons controlling everything from the air conditioning to the suspension settings, to the rear spoiler. Although the Panamera boasts a state of the art graphic interface at the center of the dash, Porsche designers believe the buttons are quicker to use than playing hunt-and-peck on a touch screen.
The steering wheel is the new Porsche PDK unit, complete with the counter-intuitive buttons — push to change up, pull to change down. The instrument panel contains Porsche’s now typical cluster of five circular gauges. The second gauge from the right contains a 4.8-in. high resolution TFT screen that gives you access to the on-board computer, via a thumb-scroll on the steering wheel. If you want, the display will show you a section of the sat-nav map, oriented in the direction of travel — brilliant if you’re driving through unfamiliar territory.

The Oldsmobile Toronado Is A Personal Luxury Car That Was Produced From Model Years 1966 To 1992. Designed To Compete With The Thunderbird And General Motors' Own Riviera, The Toronado Is Historically Significant As The First U.S.-Produced Front-Wheel Drive Automobile Since The Demise Of The Cord in 1937.
The original Toronado began as a design painting by Oldsmobile stylist David North in 1962. His design, dubbed the "Flame Red Car," was for a compact sports/personal car never intended for production. A few weeks after the design was finished, however, Oldsmobile division was informed it would be permitted to build a personal car in the Riviera/Thunderbird class for the 1966 model year, and North's design was selected. For production economy, the still-unnamed car was to share the so-called E-body shell with the redesigned 1966 Buick Riviera, which was substantially bigger than North had envisioned. Despite the efforts of Oldsmobile and General Motors styling chief Bill Mitchell to put the car on the smaller A-body intermediate, they were overruled for cost reasons.
Oldsmobile had been working on front-wheel drive since 1958, a project shepherded by engineer John Beltz (who originated the 442 and would later become head of the division). Although initially envisioned for the smaller F-85 line, its cost and experimental nature pushed the program towards a larger, more expensive car. Engineer F. J. Hooven of the Ford Motor Company, had patented a similar FWD layout, and Ford was seriously considering the design for the 1961 Ford Thunderbird. However, the time to develop and engineer such a design in such short notice made this a doubtful proposition.
Oldsmobile spent seven years developing the Toronado. Prior to its introduction to the public, over 1.5 million brutal test miles had been performed to verify the strength and reliability of the Toronado's front-drive components. Obviously, Oldsmobile did not want anyone to experience problems with the new design. History has confirmed the Toronado design was indeed heavily over-built; the GMC motorhome of the 1970s, which used a basically unchanged Toronado-derived drivetrain, stands as a testament to that fact. Nevertheless, the re-introduction of front wheel drive earned the new Toronado Motor Trend "Car of the Year" honors in 1966.
Naming the Toronado was also an event in itself. Some other known names being considered during development are: Magnum (later used by Dodge), Scirocco (later used by Volkswagen) and Raven.
