The Volkswagen Beetle, officially called the Volkswagen Type 1, is an economy car produced by Volkswagen from 1938 until 2003. Though the vehicle wasn't produced in significant numbers until 1945. The car was dreamed up as a cheap simple car, and it was commissioned by Adolf Hitler and designed by Ferdinand Porsche. The Beetle is the longest-running and most-manufactured car of a single design platform, worldwide. By 2002, over 21 million Type 1s had been produced, but by 2003, annual production had dropped to 30,000 from a peak of 1.3 million in 1971.
